Done is a decision, not a feeling.

Hey there Reader,

A client of mine (we’ll call her Danielle) has a great team. Smart, capable, hungry. And every single deliverable they produced sat in a queue waiting for one thing: Danielle’s “one more look.”

Not a review. A look. A “let me just give it a quick pass” that somehow turned into rewriting a headline at 9 PM on a Tuesday.

The work was good. Her team knew it was good. But nothing went out the door until Danielle had personally touched it, because “done” lived in her head and nowhere else. Her team wasn’t slow. They were waiting for a feeling only she could have.

Here’s what I told her: done is a decision. It’s not a feeling you wait to have, and it’s not a standard you’ll recognize when you see it. It’s a decision you make in advance, in writing, so your team can make it without you.

So we sat down and defined it. For each type of deliverable: what does done look like, what has to be right before it ships, and what can safely leave the building without her fingerprints on it? Then she handed the decision to her team.

Her first reaction was to hate it. Her second was to notice she had her evenings back. Nothing fell apart.

That’s the whole idea behind Done Is A Decision™, and it’s exactly what this week’s post is about: building a team that can move without you standing in every room.

And because “done” is really a communication problem wearing a trench coat, I’ll be digging into exactly that next Tuesday at the Goochland Women in Business event: Communication as Culture Shaping. The way you communicate expectations, standards, and decisions shapes the culture your team works in, whether you meant it to or not. If you’re local, come sit in the room with me. Details are down below.

Bold strategy. Smart systems. More sanity.

PS: Think of the last thing you held back for “one more look.” What would have happened if you’d just sent it? Sit with that for a minute before you scroll down.

Steal This

Done isn’t a feeling you wait for. It’s a decision you make in advance, in writing, so your team doesn’t need you to make it.

Try It:

Pick one recurring deliverable your team produces. Write three bullets: what “done” looks like, what must be right before it ships, and what’s good enough to send without your review. Share it with your team and tell them: “If it meets this, send it.”

In the Blog

Quick question: how many people on your team are waiting for you to say “looks good” before they move?

This week’s post is all about building a team that doesn’t need you in every room, and spoiler: it isn’t about “delegating more.” It’s about real ownership, written standards, actual authority, and an accountability rhythm that doesn’t turn you into a hall monitor. Four structural pieces, three things to start this week, zero micromanaging.

Next week we close out the series with what actually changes when it all works.

Culture isn't built in the mission statement. It's built in the way people talk to each other every single day. This session digs into how your communication sets the tone, the standards, and the habits of everyone around you, and how to shape that on purpose instead of by accident.

If your team culture feels a little "accidental," start here.

I take business owners from being overwhelmed, overworked, and undervalued to being strategic, productive, and profitable. Many business owners are too busy working in their business to work on their business. They get bogged down with wearing many hats, trying to grow their business, and deliver their product. I show business owners how to avoid the pitfalls, ignite a spark, and let their sparkle shine through.

Hey there Reader, I finally got my figure skates sharpened. “Finally” is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that sentence. I’ve needed this done for months, but my calendar and my awesome skate tech friend kept missing each other. Meanwhile, my blades had officially become butter knives. At this point they’d filed a formal complaint for neglect, citing that they hadn’t felt a proper edge since roughly the Bronze Age. The Shameful Before The Amazing After! Here’s the part that got me. My skating...

Hey there Reader, Last week I caught up with my FABulous friend Shanna K., and I walked away with a full heart and a reminder I didn't know I needed. Visiting with Shana K. Shanna and I have been involved in a few things together over the years: The Storytellers Channel's Stories Matter Showcase, Gutsy Tales Off The Rails: Living Out Loud, and her incredibly awesome FABWomen. Now she's pouring herself into her work with Needle's Eye Ministries and the community she's growing there. Hearing...

Hey there Reader, I spent last weekend camping at Belle Isle State Park on the Northern Neck, the kind of trip where you pack for relaxation and nature decides to pack a Nor'easter instead. It rained. It poured. Roads flooded. Communities around us dealt with shore erosion and blockages that turned a twenty minute drive into a genuine expedition. We drove through one flooded stretch that I still have on video, because at some point you stop being scared and start narrating like a nature...
