You’re not skating. You’re politely sliding.

Hey there Reader,

I finally got my figure skates sharpened.

“Finally” is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that sentence. I’ve needed this done for months, but my calendar and my awesome skate tech friend kept missing each other. Meanwhile, my blades had officially become butter knives. At this point they’d filed a formal complaint for neglect, citing that they hadn’t felt a proper edge since roughly the Bronze Age.

Here’s the part that got me. My skating has suffered. Without a real edge I couldn’t get a strong grip on the ice, so I wasn’t skating so much as politely sliding. And without even noticing, I’d started compensating. A little extra effort here, a workaround there, a few bad habits sneaking in to cover for a tool that wasn’t doing its job.

My friend, that is not a skating problem. That is a business problem.

Dull tools never announce themselves. You just keep showing up, working harder, and quietly losing ground. And one of the dullest tools in most businesses is the one nobody thinks to sharpen: the processes that only exist in the owner’s head. Everything still runs. It just runs through you, one workaround at a time.

Sharpening isn’t glamorous. It took one appointment and a break in my schedule, and I’ve gained back more than I lost by waiting. This week’s post is about getting that edge back in your business.

Bold strategy. Smart systems. More sanity.

PS: Try this before you click: name the five questions your team asks you most often. If you can rattle them off in under thirty seconds, you already know exactly what’s gone dull.

Steal This

A dull edge won’t stop you from working. It just makes you work harder for less ground.

Try It:

Block 20 minutes on your calendar this week and label it “Sharpen.” Use it to write down the one thing you explain most often, as if you were handing it to a brand new hire. Then put it somewhere your team can find it.

Quick question: how many things in your business only get done right because you remember how?

This week’s post (week three of the owner dependency series) digs into the processes, standards, and judgment calls that live only in your head. We cover why they keep everything routed through you, what that undocumented knowledge is quietly costing you, and how to start getting it out without it becoming a six month project. Spoiler: you start with one process, this week.

Culture isn't built in the mission statement. It's built in the way people talk to each other every single day. This session digs into how your communication sets the tone, the standards, and the habits of everyone around you, and how to shape that on purpose instead of by accident.

If your team culture feels a little "accidental," start here.

Business Strategist • Small Business • Since 2007 Are you tired of feeling like your business is running you? I take business owners from being overwhelmed, overworked, and undervalued to being strategic, productive, and profitable. Many business owners are too busy working in their business to work on their business. They get bogged down with wearing many hats, trying to grow their business, and deliver their product. I show business owners how to avoid the pitfalls, ignite a spark, and let their sparkle shine through.

Hey there Reader, Last week I caught up with my FABulous friend Shanna K., and I walked away with a full heart and a reminder I didn't know I needed. Visiting with Shana K. Shanna and I have been involved in a few things together over the years: The Storytellers Channel's Stories Matter Showcase, Gutsy Tales Off The Rails: Living Out Loud, and her incredibly awesome FABWomen. Now she's pouring herself into her work with Needle's Eye Ministries and the community she's growing there. Hearing...

Hey there Reader, I spent last weekend camping at Belle Isle State Park on the Northern Neck, the kind of trip where you pack for relaxation and nature decides to pack a Nor'easter instead. It rained. It poured. Roads flooded. Communities around us dealt with shore erosion and blockages that turned a twenty minute drive into a genuine expedition. We drove through one flooded stretch that I still have on video, because at some point you stop being scared and start narrating like a nature...

Hey there Reader, It's that time of year. My inbox has officially entered its Q4 personality just a bit early, every new business owner suddenly sprinting to close out the year strong, book one more client, hit one more number before the calendar flips. Is this client actually a good fit?But the Q4 number though. I love the energy. I do not love what it does to people's judgment. Because here's what happens every single year around this time: the phone rings, the email comes in, someone wants...
