Nothing broke. That’s what scared her.

Hey there Reader,

Remember Danielle, my client who used to hold every deliverable hostage for “one more look”? She took her first real day off last week.

Phone in a drawer. Laptop closed. Actual human behavior.

By 11 AM she texted me: “Is something wrong? It’s too quiet.”

Nothing was wrong. Her team had shipped three deliverables, answered a client question, and made one judgment call she would have made differently. It was fine. Better than fine, honestly. No fire, no crisis, no disaster waiting for her in the inbox. Just a business doing its job without her standing in the middle of it.

That’s the part nobody warns you about. After years of being the person everything runs through, the quiet doesn’t feel like freedom at first. It feels like something’s broken. Spoiler: it isn’t. That’s what it sounds like when the structure works.

And here’s what made it possible, and it’s not just the documented standards and clear ownership. It’s that Danielle finally said out loud what done looks like, who owns what, and which decisions are theirs to make. Her team didn’t need her in the room because she had made her expectations loud enough to travel without her.

Which is exactly what I’ll be talking about today at the Goochland Women in Business event: Communication as Culture Shaping. What you say out loud (and what you leave unsaid) builds the culture your team works in, whether you meant it to or not. If you’re local, come sit in the room with me. Details are below.

And if you want to see what’s waiting on the other side of all this, this week’s post closes out the series with exactly that.

Cheering you on (from a wonderfully quiet inbox),

Bold strategy. Smart systems. More sanity.

PS: If your inbox went silent for a full day, would you feel relief or panic? Be honest. That answer is the whole post.

Steal This

A quiet inbox isn’t a warning sign. It’s a team that finally has what it needs to move without you.

Try It:

Pick a two hour window this week and go fully unreachable: phone away, email closed. Before you disappear, tell your team which decisions are theirs to make. When you’re back, note what moved without you, and resist the urge to fix anything that was simply done differently.

In the Blog

What actually happens when you stop being the person everything runs through? (Hint: more changes than your calendar.)

This week’s post closes out the owner dependency series with the part nobody talks about: what shifts in your business, your time, and your role, what gets unexpectedly hard (yes, the quiet can feel wrong at first), and what becomes possible on the other side. It’s the post we’ve been building toward for four weeks.

Culture isn't built in the mission statement. It's built in the way people talk to each other every single day. This session digs into how your communication sets the tone, the standards, and the habits of everyone around you, and how to shape that on purpose instead of by accident.

If your team culture feels a little "accidental," start here.

Business Strategist • Small Business • Since 2007 Are you tired of feeling like your business is running you? I take business owners from being overwhelmed, overworked, and undervalued to being strategic, productive, and profitable. Many business owners are too busy working in their business to work on their business. They get bogged down with wearing many hats, trying to grow their business, and deliver their product. I show business owners how to avoid the pitfalls, ignite a spark, and let their sparkle shine through.

Hey there Reader, A client of mine (we’ll call her Danielle) has a great team. Smart, capable, hungry. And every single deliverable they produced sat in a queue waiting for one thing: Danielle’s “one more look.” Not a review. A look. A “let me just give it a quick pass” that somehow turned into rewriting a headline at 9 PM on a Tuesday. The work was good. Her team knew it was good. But nothing went out the door until Danielle had personally touched it, because “done” lived in her head and...

Hey there Reader, I finally got my figure skates sharpened. “Finally” is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that sentence. I’ve needed this done for months, but my calendar and my awesome skate tech friend kept missing each other. Meanwhile, my blades had officially become butter knives. At this point they’d filed a formal complaint for neglect, citing that they hadn’t felt a proper edge since roughly the Bronze Age. The Shameful Before The Amazing After! Here’s the part that got me. My skating...

Hey there Reader, Last week I caught up with my FABulous friend Shanna K., and I walked away with a full heart and a reminder I didn't know I needed. Visiting with Shana K. Shanna and I have been involved in a few things together over the years: The Storytellers Channel's Stories Matter Showcase, Gutsy Tales Off The Rails: Living Out Loud, and her incredibly awesome FABWomen. Now she's pouring herself into her work with Needle's Eye Ministries and the community she's growing there. Hearing...
